Rhodes & Co. operated an express service in Northern California ca. 1852-1856; this collection consists of items relating to the company during that period. There are eleven transaction slips (checks and receipts) for the company under various names --eight for Rhodes & Co., one for Rhodes & Lusk's and two for Rhodes & Whitney (written in). They show the majority of the transactions occurring in Yreka but several were in Shasta or Weaverville. The transactions slips are illustrated forms from lithographers O'Meara & Painter or Britton & Rey. The O'Meara forms have decorative borders; the Britton & Rey illustrations are of the California state seal; a sailing ship and the Roman god Mercury; or an individual native American. There are also three slips from the Sacramento City Bank noting transactions with members of the Rhodes family. Two of the forms were produced by Danforth, Bald & Co. and are illustrated with a sailor; three native Americans in a group; the Roman goddess Minerva (?) or two women. In addition there are the following records: two receipts made out to J. M. Rhodes for payment to Empire House and to Downer & Co. ; receipt to Rhodes & Lusk from Baxter & Co.; itemized list of charges to Rhodes & Lusk sent to Sacramento City Bank for payment; correspondence from agent E. Wadsworth to Jesse Rhodes regarding checks written for company expenses.
